At the organisation Financial Markets Consultant James Motiram supports the data management team in an environment where vast amounts of data converge. With his analytical mindset, structured approach, and natural drive to improve, he helps processes run more smoothly while strengthening them for the long term.
The challenge
The organisation faced the task of further professionalising its data management. The Look Through process — an essential element for gaining insight into underlying investments, proved to be complex and time consuming. Information was spread across multiple systems, leading to inefficiencies and a higher risk of errors.
In addition, many work instructions were outdated and inconsistent, causing employees to work in different ways. Finally, there was a lack of up-to-date management information to enable timely decision-making.
“I think it’s important not just to look at what can be improved, but also to understand why things are done the way they are,” James explains. “If you understand how people work and why processes are set up the way they are, you can implement improvements that truly stick.”
The solution
Starting from the Insights pillar, James began by thoroughly mapping out the Look Through process. He analysed where the bottlenecks were, how information was exchanged between systems, and where time, quality, and collaboration could be improved. With those insights, the focus shifted to optimisation. James started by improving daily data management processes from Corporate Actions and Pricing to Static Data and Benchmarks. He worked closely with the team to streamline workflows and revise work instructions.
“Sometimes the biggest improvement doesn’t come from technology, but from how people work together,” he explains. “By making processes and agreements clearer, you automatically create more calm and control.”
Finally, he secured the improvements under the In Control pillar. By developing dashboards, James made management information not only transparent but also practically usable. This gave the team real-time insight into progress, data quality, and performance, enabling them to make quicker and more informed adjustments.
The result
Thanks to James and his colleagues now the client has a more efficient, consistent, and future proof data management process. The combination of improved work instructions, clear dashboards, and stronger team collaboration has led to greater oversight, higher quality, and lasting improvement.
“The best moment? When you see a team confidently embrace a new process and realise that it truly works,” James says with a smile. “That’s when you know you’ve created something that lasts.”
