The story of

Maja Kouwenhoven, Consultant

Bringing people and departments together, that makes not only me, but also definitely the administrators happy.

A love for healthcare
Sporty and driven
Maja is 35 years young and a proud girlfriend and mom. She has been athletic from an early age; baseball and softball are the common denominators in the family. Maja: “I started studying biomedical sciences. My dream of studying medicine fell through when I was rejected. Then I started working in the healthcare sector as a finance trainee.” We asked Maja where her love for this sector comes from. “It’s all about human contact and contributing to well-being, even if it’s indirect from a business perspective. My studies in biomedical sciences were confirmation of that. It was the right sector, but it also gave me insight that I need interaction with people, which I missed in the world of research. Hence also why I started doing the master’s in Management, Policy and Entrepreneurship in Healthcare.”

The power of connection
What course are we on?
Maja soon discovered that her interest went beyond numbers. “I am concerned with business processes and how they can be set up more efficiently. Most important to me is that everyone is on the same page and we are all on the same course.” She has gained experience in different positions and departments, so she knows the lines of communication well. Maja explains, “It helps me to get everyone on the team on board with change. For me, this is very inspiring working together; it symbolizes the power of connection.”

How to be in control
Seizing opportunities
“The healthcare sector is under pressure from staff shortages, rising costs and the increasing emphasis on sustainability. As crazy as it sounds, this presents enormous opportunities for process optimization. Technological innovations and data analytics can improve healthcare processes and promote sustainability, which in turn contributes to the quality of care. This can also help to provide insight into sustainability indicators and then take improvement measures based on these. Improvements can be identified and implemented from business control, for example. By analyzing existing processes, identifying inefficiencies and creating support for the (sustainable) change, an integral approach is important, involving all layers of the organization.” – Maja

asqin you the last question?
We asked Maja what last question we should ask her. She replied: “Are you satisfied and happy with the work you are doing now?” Naturally, we were curious as to why this is Maja’s question, and what her own answer to it is. “Yes, definitely. I have an enormous amount of variety in my work, which I find really nice and important. I can help multiple organizations (in a relatively short period of time) and continue to develop myself. In addition to those developments, I also get the space to do a study that I get a lot of energy from. And yes, in addition I also have enough time for my family and social life!” – Maja
